How long laptop battery will last?

Posted by Mike Bamya on

Laptop rechargeable Lithium-Ion/Lithium-Polymer batteries have a limited life and will gradually lose their ability to hold as much charge, compared to the original design capacity. As the battery loses capacity, the run time will decreases. The average run time for most laptops is between 1.5 hours to 4 hours depending on the battery age and laptop model and what applications are being used. There are many factors that will also reduce the how long the battery will last such as screen size, screen brightness, laptops with dual graphics, temperature, number of processor cores, CPU running speed and power plan, all of these tend to have a shorter battery run time.

Using the CD/DVD player, watching video, playing games, streaming media and the screen brightness use up the most battery. For example dimming your screen even a lit bit can give you noticeably more battery life.

It is normal for all batteries to lose some capacity over time. Each time you discharge and recharge your battery, a very small amount of this capacity is lost.

Here are a few easy ways you can enable to extend battery life:

  1. Consider buying new battery. If you bought a refurbished or used laptop/mobile phone, always consider replacing the battery.
  2. Reduce screen brightness level. Screens are one of the largest users of the power, save some battery life by turning the screen brightness to the lowest comfortable level.
  3. Unplug unneeded devices. To save battery life, remove other devices like phones or headphones that are charging using your laptop USB port.
  4. Turn off Bluetooth (if available). If you are not using Bluetooth, you can disable this feature to avoid draining the laptop battery.
  5. Shut down the laptop. If there are no plans to use the laptop for a while, we recommend to shut-down the laptop.
  6. Use Microsoft recommended settings to extend battery life https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/battery-saving-tips-for-windows-a850d64d-ee8e-c8d2-6c75-8ffe6ea3ea99#Category=Windows_10
  7. Check what applications might run on the background draining your battery (Windows Settings, select System, and then select Battery
